Baby Feeding Tips from Around the World – Lingzhi

Yesterday we posted a few questions about grains that were sent into us by Belinda, a visitor from Malaysia who wrote to us about her granddaughter. Today, we’d like to share with you Belinda’s response to our answers – in which she tells us about the benefits both her daughter and granddaugther have derived from lingzhi, one of the oldest mushrooms known to have been used in medicine…

My granddaughter was only 2.3 kg at birth and she put on about 100 – 200 gm each month. When, at 4 months old, she had not put on any weight at all and she was refusing her milk, it was most worrying for me and her mum which was why I decided to start giving her solid food at 4 1/2 months.

We also took her to a well known pediatrician for a thorough check up and she was certified a very healthy baby in spite of her not taking much milk. This doctor showed us pictures of the types of food to feed her and the quantity for each meal. I did a Google search for homemade food for babies, which led me to your wonderful site. I’m very happy to say that since I followed your recipes, she had put on 500 gms within 3 weeks! She still does not take much milk, though.

Here is something which I would love to share with you and other parents.

My daughter, when she was pregnant, started taking lingzhi, pollen and soy protein and as she is breastfeeding, she still takes them. My granddaughter is also given lingzhi every day since birth and she has never had any illness, not even a cold (touch wood).

She has a lovely healthy complexion and whoever sees her always admire her lovely pink cheeks (which is not common for a Chinese). I believe the lingzhi and breast milk boost her immunity system and health. Lingzhi is very bitter but since my granddaughter was fed this from birth, she takes it on a spoon without any problem.

Thank you so much, Belinda, for taking the time to share this – we find this very interesting and have never come across it before!

We’d love to know if any of our visitors have ever used lingzhi and how they feel it has benefited them or their children… please do let us know by sharing your comments below.

Please note that the information given in this post is from another parent and does not constitute medical advice. You should speak to your doctor before offering any new foods to your baby.

I am a mother of 4, and before I got pregnant with my fourth child, I was so underweight that I was diagnosed as stage 2 malnourished, being only about 85 pounds, 5 feet tall, and 39 years old.

A friend told me to take lingzhi. I bought from a Chinese drugstore which was in a capsule form, and took 1 capsule daily. The very first time that I had taken the capsule, my appetite greatly improved, and I gained 10 pounds in just 7 days! Having that positive result, I decided to continue taking the capsule. When I got pregnant with my fourth child, I discontinued taking it because of fear of gaining too much weight, and now that I am breastfeeding, I am still hesitant to take it again because I don't know what effects it will give my child, though I have already read above of the very nice effect on Belinda's granddaughter.
