Baby’s Homemade Cheese and Veggie Sausages

Sausages are not – in general – a good food for babies. They tend to be high in salt and the less expensive brands often contain undesirable ingredients such as connective tissue – certainly NOT want you want to be introducing your little one to!

Today’s recipe, however, is for yummy ‘sausages’ made with cheese, that are not only healthier for your tiny diner but can be enjoyed by vegetarian babies, too!

Babys homemade cheese and veggie sausages

These Cheesy Sausages make a wonderful finger food for babies who are comfortably biting and chewing.

As a time saver, you can make this mixture in advance and freeze it for later use – but we don’t recommend freezing the sausages after cooking them as it gives them a strange texture!

Please note that this recipe has a 2-hour chilling time – so don’t leave it too late to get started on the day you wish to serve them!

This recipe makes 6 sausages.

To Make Baby’s Cheese and Veggie Sausages You Will Need…

2 oz (1 cup) whole wheat breadcrumbs
1 heaped table spoon wheat germ
1 tbsp butter
2 spring onions/scallions/green onions
6 oz (1 1/2 cups) grated carrot
5 oz (1 1/4 cup) Cheddar cheese
1 egg yolk
little olive oil
1 tsp chopped, fresh parsley

Make the bread crumbs by processing slightly stale bread in your food processor (or grating with a grater if the bread is firm enough), then add the wheat germ.

Finely chop the onions, then saute in the butter with the grated carrot until the veggies are tender.

Mix the cooked veggies with around half the breadcrumb/wheat germ mixture and the grated cheese. Stir in the egg yolk and parsley.

Make ‘sausage’ shapes from the mixture with your hands, then roll the sausages in the breadcrumbs until they are thoroughly coated. I find the mixture is sticky enough for the breadcrumbs to hold, but if yours keep falling off, try rolling the sausages in a little natural yogurt first.

Chill for 2 hours.

Fry the sausages in a little olive oil until golden brown, turning carefully to cook on all sides.

Finally, cool and serve. If your baby likes to dip his finger foods, try serving these with applesauce – delicious!
