Baby’s Pea Puree Isn’t Smooth Enough
Nov 24th, 2008 by Christine
Rebecca wrote to us this weekend about a problem she’s experiencing when trying to puree peas for her baby…
I steamed a bag of frozen baby peas and then pureed them in my food chopper. But no matter how much I puree the peas, the skins of the peas will not puree. And they make my baby gag. Am I using the wrong peas?
Don’t worry, you’re not using the wrong peas – unfortunately, peas are notoriously difficult to puree to a completely smooth texture. Some types of food processor give better results than others – for example, we gave up trying to puree peas with our hand blender because the results were very poor. Pureeing them in small batches in our Magic Bullet blender worked better, although they were never totally smooth.
Having traces of the skins remaining in the puree is not, in itself, a problem… UNLESS they are causing your baby to gag (which is happening in your case).
The best solution is to pass the pea puree through a very fine mesh strainer AFTER processing in the blender – it’s a bit more work, but it does remove those stubborn little bits of skin and will make the puree more enjoyable for your little one.
Hope this helps!

I was able to get a smooth puree without straining by using a blender on the fastest setting and letting it run for two mintues or so. Add a little water so it really gets moving and the skins will puree.
Thanks Andrea !
Yep, I stopped using my food processor and started using my Magic Bullet instead. It actually gets the baby food WAY smoother than the food processor ever did!
I was able to get smooth peas by taking Andrea’s advice and running then through the blender for two or three minutes. They were perfect. Big improvment from my food processor and i didn’t have to push them through a mesh strainer. I used the water that the peas were cooked in to make them smooth. Heard that u can use breast milk and or formula also.
