‘Canned’ Soup That’s Good For Baby

The title of this post is actually a little tongue in cheek… because we don’t recommend offering your baby canned soup at all!

For one thing, canned soup tends to contain too much salt to make it a safe food for your little one to eat. It’s also less nutritious than homemade soup and FAR less tasty!

Instead, the can in our title refers to a rather ingenious method for storing soups and other liquids in the freezer. Let us explain…

An empty can with no label

We received a message last week from mom of twins Fern from Tampa, Florida. Fern told us how she loves to prepare homemade soup for her babies (and for herself and her hubby too), but that she had run into a problem with storing her creations.

As a working mom, she likes to cook in bulk, but freezing lots of different batches of soup meant that most of her storage containers wound up in the freezer!

Then she found a neat solution…

What I do now is use large zip-top bags. I put the bags into sturdy containers like coffee cans, then pour in the cooled soup (the coffee can supports the bag). I then place the whole can – with the bag inside – into the freezer. Once the soup is frozen, I just lift out the bag and store it in the freezer. That way,  I still have all my containers available to use for other things and  I find the bags easy to stack !

Thank you very much, Fern, for this great tip. We think it would work equally well for other things like homemade stocks and gravies too!

When I freeze stock, I do it in ziptop bags, but I lay them flat. It will then freeze flat and they are much easier to store and take up less space that way!
