Feeding Baby During a Hurricane!

We’re all just a little relieved here in the Bahamas this morning, after experiencing just the outer edges of Tropical Storm Isaac yesterday, but – thankfully – nothing more serious than that. We’re watching and praying for all those still in the path of the storm and hoping that it does not develop into a hurricane.

Feeding baby during a hurricaneThis is a volatile time of year in this part of the world – in fact, it’s almost a year to the day that we were writing to tell you we were ‘back on air’ after Hurricane Irene, which – unfortunately – DID hit us head on! And back in 2004, we experienced two hurricanes within three weeks of each other, when our youngest daughter at the time was only six months old.

We learned a couple of important lessons during those storms, not least that – in addition to its many other advantages – breastfeeding is quite literally a lifesaver in an emergency situation. With no power and no clean water for several days, the ability to feed our little one sterile milk at just the right temperature was something for which we will be forever thankful!

We also had to pay close attention to the safety of the purees we’d prepared for her, which were sitting in the freezer when the hurricane struck. The following year (2005) this website was born – and an article about food safety during a power outage was one of the first we wrote!

So if YOU’RE in an area of extreme weather – or simply in an area that frequently suffers power outages – please see the following page about keeping baby food in the fridge/freezer, which includes food safety tips for before, during and after an outage.

Another article that may interest you is our recipe for oat bars! We stocked up on these during Hurricane Irene because they’re suitable for everyone from older babies to adults, delicious enough to make everyone believe they’re having a real treat (even though their sugarfree) and don’t require refrigeration. The perfect snack for emergency situations!

Baby Food Ideas – No Cooking Required

Although this post was designed to help come up with menu ideas for baby whilst on vacation, some of the suggestions would be equally useful during a hurricane or other situation where you may not be able to cook, or easily keep food cool.

We do hope you find these tips useful and if you have any of your own to share, then please leave a comment below.

And if this is a stormy time of year fee you in YOUR corner of the world, then please do stay safe.
