How to Make Bread Crumbs

We sometimes list fresh bread crumbs as an ingredient in our baby food recipes – so today we are going to tell you just how to easily make bread crumbs at home!

How to make bread crumbs

First, of course, you need bread – and to make your homemade bread crumbs as nutritious as possible, we suggest using whole wheat (or wholemeal) bread. You can, however, use any type of bread that you have available.

Now, the secret to making good bread crumbs is that the bread you start with should be very dry, allowing it to crumble easily. Some people use stale bread for this reason – if the bread is only slightly stale, then this is fine, but VERY stale bread will produce bread crumbs with a flavour that’s less than fresh, too!

If you only have perfectly fresh bread available, then you will need to dry it yourself. The easiest way to do this is to place it on a baking sheet in a single layer, then put it into an oven set at 225 deg F (110 deg C). Turn it over after about 5 mins, then continue to dry in the oven for 5 mins more. Take it out and allow it to cool.

The next step is to tear up the bread, place it into a food processor and whizz until the crumbs have reached the desired size.

If you don’t have a food processor…

Then you can achieve the same effect by ‘grating’ stale bread with a cheese grater (use the larger holes).

You can then use your homemade bread crumbs just as they are, or add your baby’s favourite herbs and spices to create great new flavours.

For the best flavour, store your bread crumbs no longer than a few days in an airtight container, which should be kept in a cool, dry place!

As you can see, there really is no need to splash out on commercial bread crumbs when making your own is so simple!
