If Baby Is Given Antibiotics, Offer Him Yogurt!

Did you know that it’s a really good idea to give your baby yogurt if he’s been prescribed antibiotics by a pediatrician?

Many of us Mums know that yogurt helps prevent yeast infections triggered by antibiotics – but what’s less well known is the fact that antibiotics destroy both the bad AND the good bacteria in the large intestine.

Yes, there IS such a thing as ‘good’ bacteria and their job in the large intestine is to help with digestion and kill off those pesky ‘bad’ bacteria. The problem is that antibiotics can’t tell the difference between the two.

Unfortunately, the destruction of the ‘good’ bacteria allows the bad ones to take over – and the result of this for baby can be a bout of diarrhea, known as antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

So how can yogurt help?

Yogurt contains probiotics – the total opposite to antibiotics in that they assist the growth of helpful bacteria.

If you offer your baby yogurt as soon as he starts his antibiotics, every day throughout the course and for a good ten days afterwards, you will help maintain and replenish the level of good bacteria in his gut. This should avoid antibiotic-associated diarrhea – which, let’s face it, is the last thing he needs considering that he’s already on medication for something else!

But steer clear of sugary, flavoured ‘children’s’ yogurts – the best type of yogurt for your baby is pure and natural.

Please note that this should not be construed as medical advice and you should ALWAYS consult your doctor before introducing any new foods into your child’s diet – OR if you little one develops diarrhea OR if you have any other concerns.
