Plum, Banana and Brown Rice Puree

A brilliant breakfast or a delicious dessert… the way you use today’s quick and easy homemade baby food recipe is up to you!

Plum, banana and brown rice puree

We feel this dish has the perfect blend of flavours; plums tend to be a bit on the tart side around here, but we find that the combination of plum and sweet banana works wonderfully and makes a healthy duo that will appeal to baby’s taste buds!

The brown rice in the recipe brings extra vitamins, minerals and iron to the dish – and although you could use white rice instead, it doesn’t come close to brown in terms of nutritional value (learn more about brown rice here).

This recipe is wonderful for babies from 6 months of age.

To Make Plum, Banana and Brown Rice Puree You Will Need…

4 tbsp cooked brown rice (we like to slightly overcook it so it’s very soft)
2 fl oz (1/4 cup) milk – use breast milk, formula or whole milk
1 plum, pitted and chopped*
1/2 ripe banana, sliced (you can increase the sweetness of the recipe by adding a little more banana if you wish)

*Most of the nutrients in the plum are in – or just under – the skin, so you may prefer to leave it on. It purees quite well, just leaving easy-to-manage flecks (as in our photo). For this reason, organic plums are a good choice, as you don’t need to worry about peeling them in order to avoid pesticide residues. Learn more about peeling fruits and veggies for baby here.

Put the cooked rice in a small saucepan and pour in the milk.

Bring to the boil, then lower the heat and add the chopped plum.

Simmer for 3 to 5 mins, until the plum is tender.

Remove from the heat and cool.

Place the mixture in a blender and add the sliced banana.

Pulse to achieve a puree with just a little texture, or process completely until smooth and serve!
