Recall of Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gates (US)
Aug 6th, 2009 by Christine
Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gates are being recalled because the hinges that hold the gate in place may break, posing a hazard to children – particularly if the gate is placed at the top of stairs.
The gates involved have a model number of 42111, which you can find printed on a sticker under the panel handle. The gates were manufactured before December 20, 2008 and are made of white metal with a gray handle and a motion sensor nightlight, which lights up when someone approaches. You can find the manufacture date below the gate’s handle – it is a ‘date wheel’ imprinted in the plastic, with an arrow indicating the month, and the year stamped inside the circle. The manufacture date is also shown on a sticker inside the battery door.
These gates were sold from January 2005 through July 2009 at mass merchandise and juvenile product stores nationwide, including Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart.com and other online retailers. They were sold for about $60.
If you have one of these gates, please stop using it and contact Dorel Juvenile Group toll-free at (866) 690-2540 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET for a free repair kit. Alternatively, complete an online order form on the Dorel Juvenile Group Web site at www.djgusa.com/safety_notice/ to obtain the repair kit; email the company at Smartlightgate@djgusa.com, or send a fax to (800) 207-8182. You should not take the gate back to a retail store.
