Baby’s Pea and Apple Puree

Peas are an excellent food for your baby, although many people don’t realize how nutritious they actually are!

Rich in vitamins and minerals, peas are a great source of fiber, protein and iron. They have a sweetness to them which babies love, particularly the tender and delicious ‘petit pois’.

This recipe adds even more natural sweetness to peas by combining them with fruit!

Apples bring their own nutrients to the dish, whilst that little boost in sweetness can help tempt babies who might refuse peas served up on their own.

Variations

This recipe is very simple and uses just three ingredients!

You have a choice when you come to which liquid you use – water, stock or apple juice.

We like to use chicken stock, which adds a richness to the flavor, or you can amp up the fruitiness with unsweetened apple juice instead!

But if you don’t have either of those on hand, water will do the job just fine!

You might even want to experiment with herbs to change the flavor and see what your baby enjoys. Peas go well with tarragon, which would make a fab addition to this dish. Snipped chives are great too.

To make Baby’s Pea and Apple Puree You Will Need…

1/3 cup frozen peas (or podded, fresh peas)
1/2 sweet apple, cored and chopped*
1/4 cup water, stock, apple juice

*We used a Golden Delicious apple in our recipe and left the skin on, although you can remove it if you wish.

Place all the ingredients in a small saucepan.

Bring to the boil, then lower the heat, cover and simmer for around 5 mins, until the apple is tender.

Place in a food processor and either pulse (to leave a little texture, as pictured) or blend until smooth.

Tip

If you’re having trouble getting the peas to puree properly, try adding a little extra water to the mixture and blending it for longer.

Another option is to push the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve after blending, to get rid of any stubborn bits!
