A good gravy makes a delicious addition to many meals and can be a great way to make your baby’s less-than-favourite veggies a little more appealing!
However, many commerically available gravy mixes and powders tend to be too salty to be safely included in your baby’s menu (more information here about the dangers of adding salt to baby food).
So today we have a really useful recipe for you – for a salt free, nutritious vegetarian gravy… perfect, of course, for non veggie babies too!
This nutrient packed gravy tastes wonderful with just about anything – and, if you make a large batch ahead of time – it can be easily frozen for future use!
Here’s what you’ll need for baby’s vegetarian gravy…
12 fl oz (1 1/2 cups) homemade vegetable stock
12 fl oz (1 1/2 cups) water
1 small onion, peeled and chopped
1 medium carrot, diced (peel the carrot if it is not organic – for more information, please see Should I Peel Fruits and Vegetables for My Baby?)
1 small sweet potato, peeled and diced
1 cup of red lentils, rinsed
pinch oregano
pinch thyme
pinch basil
pinch freshly ground black pepper
olive oil
Heat the oil and saute the chopped onion, carrot and sweet potato for around 7-8 mins, until they begin to soften.
Pour in the vegetable stock and half the water.
Add the lentils and seasonings and bring to the boil.
Simmer gently, covered, for around half an hour, checking frequently and adding more water if the mixture seems too dry.
When the lentils are cooked, transfer the mixture to a food processor and blend until smooth, thinning with as much water as necessary to achieve your desired texture.
Serve to baby!
