Vegetables like sweet potato, pumpkin and butternut squash are absolutely delicious when cut into cubes, roasted and served as a finger food.
Roasting gives them a sort of ‘skin’ that makes them easier for baby to pick up – and also brings out the richness of their flavours.
Our homemade baby food recipe for today is extremely simple – but it takes the flavour of roasted sweet potato or squash to a whole new level!
If you’re a regular visitor to our site, you’ll know that we love to incorporate aromatic spices into many of our baby food recipes – in part for the way they enhance the taste of the recipe… and sometimes for the additional health benefits they add to the dish!
As a result, we have five ‘non-picky’ children who adore a truly flavours from all types of cuisines, making cooking for them (or travelling with them) an absolute pleasure!

To Make Gourmet Sweet Potato Cubes for Baby You Will Need…
1 medium sweet potato, peeled and cut into 3/4 inch cubes
1 pinch each of turmeric, cinnamon, paprika and cumin
1 tbsp olive oil or pure coconut oil
Combine the spices with the oil (if you wish, you can heat a small saucepan and ‘toast’ the spices for a minute or two first, to really bring out their flavour!).
Toss the sweet potato cubes in the spiced oil mixture until thoroughly coated.

Place the sweet potato cubes in a roasting tin and cook for between 20-30 minutes until tender, shaking the tin from time to time to turn them.

My 16 month old loved these too. Very tasty. Next time I am going to try dusting them with a little corn starch to make them crispier.

Can you freeze these afterwards?

The only problem we've found with freezing them is that it affects their texture and they don't always hold together as well once thawed (they tend to be 'wetter' and mushier). We once used Cuban sweet potato instead and they were better thawed - probably because they have a dry texture anyway, so they weren't affected as much by being frozen.
