Huge Recall of Stork Craft Cribs (US/Canada)

Today we have a recall to tell you about that will probably affect many of us, as it involves over 2 million drop-side Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo.

The CPSC is advising parents with these cribs to stop using them at once and to wait for a free repair kit. You can obtain the kit by contacting Stork Craft – the kit will convert the drop-side to a fixed side. The CPSC warns against trying to repair the crib yourself and says that you should find somewhere else for your baby to sleep for the time being.

So what’s the problem with these cribs?

It’s actually a very serious one. The plastic hardware for the drop-side may break, become misshapen or parts may even detach. Also, there’s a risk that the drop-side can be installed upside down, resulting in further damage to the hardware.

These problems can lead to the drop-side detaching in at least one corner, creating a space between the drop-side and the crib mattress. This space can lead to entrapment of a baby or young child, which poses a risk of suffocation. The drop-side may even detach altogether, creating a fall hazard.

There have been many reported incidents of bumps and bruises to children associated with the defects in these cribs.

The recall involves Stork Craft drop-side cribs and Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. Cribs WITHOUT a drop-side are NOT included in this recall. Also, cribs with METAL rod drop-side hardware are not included in the recall – only those cribs with plastic trigger and one-hand-system drop-side hardware are affected.

This recall applies to Stork Craft cribs with manufacturing and distribution dates between January 1993 and October 2009. It also includes Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo that have manufacturing dates between October 1997 and December 2004.

You can find the manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firm’s name, address, and contact information on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board.

The firm’s insignia “storkcraft baby” or “storkling” is inscribed on the drop-side teething rail of some cribs.

In Stork Craft cribs that contain the “Fisher-Price” logo, this logo can be found on the crib’s teething rail, in the manufacturer’s instructions, on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board, and on the end panels of the Twinkle-Twinkle and Crystal crib models.

The cribs were sold for between $100 and $400 at retailers including BJ’s Wholesale Club, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, USA Baby, and Wal-Mart stores and online at Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com from January 1993 through October 2009.
