Koala brand biscuits, which have been distributed to Chinese supermarkets and other independent retailers across the UK , are being recalled because they have been found to contain a small amount of melamine.
As you are probably aware, China is experiencing a tragic crisis at the moment as thousands of babies have been sickened – and four babies have died – after consuming formula containing melamine. Melamine is a chemical used in the manufacture of plastics and has subsequently been found in a large number of Chinese dairy products.
Authorities are currently checking ALL Chinese products containing more than 15% milk to ensure that any melamine levels they contain do not exceed 2.5 mg/kg. The Koala biscuits contain 4.98 mg/kg. Despite this, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) says that the risk to consumers from products containing a proportion of milk product (composite products) is low, but that “some people may choose not to eat them”.
Of course, it is very unlikely that you would want your children to consume these biscuits in light of the discovery of the melamine they contain.
The products involved are all batch codes of …
