Recall of Tots In Mind Crib Tents (US)

The CPSC has warned that crib tents and playard tents made by Tots in Mind, Inc. pose serious hazards to babies and young children, following the tragic death of one child and the severe brain injury of another.

The playard tents were originally recalled in July 2010 by Tots in Mind, who then offered a repair kit. However, the kit is no longer available and Tots In Mind is no longer in business. Anyone with one of these playard tents is, therefore, advised to simply stop using it immediately and to not even try to repair it.

Retailers who have been selling these products are now offering store credits or refunds to customers who have bought them, because of the strangulation and entrapment hazards they pose. The problem is caused by the dome portion, which may invert inside the crib or become detached from the crib.

The products included in this recall were sold for between $60 and $85 at a variety of outlets including Toys R Us/Babies R Us, Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond/Buy Buy Baby, Burlington Coat Factory and online.

If you have one of these products, please contact the store you bought it from in order to receive a store credit or refund (this depends on which retailer is involved). If you’re not sure where it was purchased, the CPSC suggests you see the return policy for the individual retailers below on their website:

Amazon.com [Amazon.com]

Bed Bath & Beyond / Buy Buy Baby [bedbathandbeyond.com or buybuybaby.com or (800) GOBEYOND]

Burlington Coat Factory [burlingtoncoatfactory.com or (888) 223-2628]

Toys R Us/Babies R Us [toysrus.com or babiesrus.com or (800) 869-7787]

Walmart [walmartstores.com or (800) 925-6278]

About 330,000 crib or play yard tents are included in this recall. You can identify your tent by the 2”x 1½” label with Tots In Mind logo, which is on the non-mesh portion near the top of the tent.

Well, hopefully you should have no difficulty in getting a refund or store credit to replace it. But it's tough if he's climbing out of his crib, yet not quite ready for a toddler bed. None of ours did that, thank goodness. Anyone else been in this situation? Do you have any suggestions for a more suitable crib for a climber?

Darn it. I just bought one a few months ago. My 20 month old fell out of his crib. I'm not ready to put him in a toddler bed.
