If your doctor has recommended that your baby receive a vitamin D supplement, then please do take care in administering it. The FDA is warning that some liquid vitamin D supplement products have droppers that allow parents or caregivers to give harmful amounts of vitamin D to babies.
The problem is that the droppers are often able to hold more of the supplement than a baby should be given.
Although vitamin D is important for the body – because it assists with calcium absorption – too much can cause a variety of problems including nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, excessive thirst, frequent urination, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, muscle and joint aches, confusion, and fatigue… and even serious effects like kidney damage.
If YOU need to give a vitamin D supplement to your child, please read the FDA’s recommendations for administering the dose, which you can find here.
