We love turnips – they’re easy to cook, high in vitamin C and have a unique but indescribable flavour – something like a super tasty potato!
They can be mashed or pureed with ease – making them the perfect ingredient for baby food recipes – but today we’re going to tell you how to use them to make a delicious cheesy bake.
The great thing about this – apart from the fact that your baby will adore the taste – is that it doubles up as a yummy side dish for the family’s main meal!
This recipe is ideal if your little one is already enjoying some texture to his food, but it can easily be pureed for younger babies.
For this Cheesy Turnip Bake Recipe you will need…
3 medium turnips, peeled and sliced very thinly
2 tbsp unsalted butter
2 tbsp all-purpose (or plain) flour
12 fl oz (1 1/2 cups) whole milk
4 oz (1 cup) grated Cheddar cheese
pinch of dried thyme and parsley
Steam the turnip slices over 2 inches of water until tender (10-12 mins).
Transfer the slices to a greased casserole (4 cup capacity).
Preheat the oven to 430 deg F (220 deg C).
Put the butter in a heavy saucepan and melt it over a low heat.
Gradually blend the flour into the butter, then cook for one minute, stirring constantly.
Slowly pour in the milk, raise the heat a little, and continue to stir constantly until the mixture has thickened.
Stir in the parsley and thyme, then pour the sauce into the casserole, over the turnips.
Top with the grated cheese, then place in the oven and bake for 20 mins, until the cheese is melted and golden.
Chop or mash to a texture suitable for baby.
