Oaty Hummus Crackers for Baby

Today’s recipe uses just two healthy ingredients – oats and hummus.

Whilst both of these are very nutritious, they are not the easiest of foods for your baby to feed himself. Until now, that is!

These oaty hummus crackers have a crisp and crumbly texture, so they are perfect for babies who are comfortably biting and chewing. Also good for baby-led weaning, they make a convenient and mess-free way to enjoy two foods that you wouldn’t typically think of feeding your baby on the go.

This makes them ideal travel snacks – and they’re fab served at home, too, either just as they are or with a tasty dip or spread.

Unlike many crackers, these are gluten-free (although you should double-check your oats as there is sometimes a risk of cross-contamination if they are processed in the same facility as other grains containing gluten).

Is hummus good for babies?

Full of flavour, hummus is a nutritious, high-protein food, containing vitamins B and E, folate, iron, and fibre.

Store-bought hummus, however, can sometimes be quite high in salt. It also contains tahini, which is made from toasted, ground sesame seeds.

Because added salt should be kept to a minimum in your baby’s diet – and because some children are sensitive to sesame seeds – you might prefer to make your own hummus and tweak the recipe accordingly.

Why not take a look at our hummus recipes page, where we discuss this in a lot more detail and suggest how to make the healthiest hummus possible for your little one?

That page also contains lots of suggestions for hummus variations – and any that you choose will work equally well in this recipe!

A bowl of crackers for baby made with hummus and oats

To Make Oaty Hummus Crackers for Baby You Will Need…

3/4 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup homemade hummus

1. Preheat your oven to 350° Fahrenheit.

2. Lightly grease a baking sheet.

3. Mix the oats and hummus together thoroughly in a bowl. The exact amount of oats you will need may vary, depending on which hummus recipe you used. You want to produce a dough that is easy to handle and not too sticky, so you may need to use more oats than I did if the texture of your hummus was a little thinner.

4. Once the mixture is well combined, divide it into 12 and roll each piece into a ball in your hands. Transfer each ball to the baking sheet as you go.

5. Next, use the palm of your hand to flatten each ball to the thickness of a cracker. Don’t worry if they don’t look perfect – I think the rustic, uneven look is part of their charm!

6. Place in the oven and bake for around 40 minutes until crisp and golden.

7. Cool and serve.

This recipe produces 12 crackers. They keep very well for 3 to 3 days if stored in an airtight container.
