Recall of Drop Side Cribs (US and Canada)

Drop-side cribs are being recalled by Shermag Inc., of Quebec, Canada. The hazard is that the drop-side rail hardware on the cribs can break or may not work correctly, so the drop side may detach from the crib. This creates a dangerous gap between the drop-side rail and the mattress, posing suffocation and strangulation hazards. It would also be possible for a child to fall out of the crib when the rail unexpectedly falls or detaches from the crib. The recall notice states that drop-side rail failures are caused by either incorrect assembly or by age-related wear and tear.

The wooden drop-side cribs involved in this recall have hidden drop-side hardware. They were sold in various colors and have model numbers 202647, 211047 and 272547. You can find the model numbers on stickers and labels on the headboard or footboard.

They were sold as part of the “City Lights,” “Fairy Tales” and “Dormez Vous” furniture collections. You can find “Shermag” printed on a tag on the mattress springs.

The cribs were sold for between $400 and $800 at The Land of Nod and other baby specialty stores from September 2004 through December 2008.

If you have one of these cribs, please stop using it. You should contact Shermag at (800) 567-3419 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET Monday through Friday to request a free repair kit that will immobilize the drop-side.
