The Secret Benefits of Plums

Blueberries have always been thought of as ‘super fruits’ – in other words, one of the healthiest fruits available. But scientists say that new research has shown that blueberries now have some competition for the top ‘healthy fruit’ spot – because plums have been found to contain higher levels of nutrients than previously thought!

Scientists at Texas AgriLife Research analyzed 100 varieties of plums, peaches and nectarines and found that they either matched or exceeded blueberries in disease-preventing phytonutrients and anti-oxidants. And plums were found to be the best of all!

These nutrients are very important in the diet, as they destroy ‘free radicals’ that may exist in the body. Free radicals exist where serious conditions like heart disease and cancer are found.

This is great news, because plums are much cheaper than blueberries – also, they may be available in areas where blueberries are not!
