How to Store Leftover Avocado

We love using avocado in our baby food recipes! It’s buttery, nutritious and ready to eat, right from the skin!

The only problem is that it’s rare we use the whole avocado all in one go. And as you may have discovered, cut avocado is not particularly easy to store!

Avocado – like banana – has a tendency to turn brown once the flesh is exposed to the air. There ARE a few things you can do to prevent this – see our post: How to Stop Avocado Turning Brown.

But even if you manage to keep it a lovely, vibrant green, avocado is generally only good for a day or two in the fridge.

So we suggest freezing it instead – it won’t go brown and you can keep it for up to 3 months!

Here’s the best way to do it.

How to Freeze Avocado

  1. Cut a ripe avocado in half and remove the pit.
  2. Use a spoon to remove the flesh from the avocado.
  3. Mash it thoroughly with a fork or the back of the spoon.
  4. Line a cookie sheet with waxed/greaseproof paper.
  5. Divide the avocado into 1 tablespoon portions and place them on the cookie sheet.
  6. Freeze until solid (how quickly this happens will depend on your freezer! Mine took about an hour).
  7. Transfer the portions to a food-safe freezer bag.

You now have handy little avocado portions that you can use in other baby food recipes, pop into your baby’s smoothies, use in his sandwiches or spread on toast.

Avocadoes keep so well using this method that it’s worth looking out for them when they’re on sale, buying in bulk and saving them for future use!

How to Thaw Avocado

Transfer the avocado portions to the fridge at least 6 hours before you want to use them (but preferably the evening before). Make sure you keep them covered as they thaw, or they will quickly discolour. Use within 48 hours.

If you forget to take the avocado out of the freezer in time, try thawing it in water instead.

Just place the portion in a sealed, food-safe bag and put it into a bowl of cold water. After 15 minutes, turn the bag. After another 15 minutes, change the water.

Repeat the process until the avocado has thawed.
